How to design your house for a good feng shui

We’ve all heard of feng shui, but do any of us know what it actually means or how to put its principles into action in our own homes?

Feng shui, directly translated, means ‘wind and water’, and refers to the organisational principles that make spaces calmer, happier and more restorative. It helps us align our energies with our surroundings, reducing stress by creating a positive environment in which to gather your energy for the outside world.

Overcrowded living spaces are very much a symptom of modern-day life. This ancient practice is helping people find calm in their living spaces, no matter the size. If the clutter and mess in your home is causing you stress, adopt the key principles of feng shui for a more peaceful, happy home. Start with your front door

The benefits of feng shui begin the moment you approach your front door and step into your home. Reduce the rise of stress by clearing the area, making sure to store shoes and coats to reduce the overall clutter. By making the space more inviting and spacious, you are allowing positive energies to enter and flow through the house.

Position your bed correctly

In feng shui, the bed is of principle importance. In fact, it is in the commanding position and generally decides where everything else in your bedroom is situated. Position your bed where you can see the door; this is key.

Avoid doors opening out directly onto the bed and for your feet to be facing the doors. This is sometimes called the ‘coffin position’ and is thought (with good reason) to encourage bad energies. If possible, try and keep the sides of your bed free and place your headboard against a solid wall.

Be mindful of your doors and windows

Windows and doors take a whole new significance in feng shui. They are representative of eyes, voice and communication. Allow the light to pour into your home by cleaning them regularly and keeping their path clear of big pieces of furniture.

In the same vein, doors are seen as portals. Don’t block them, allow them to open freely and take good care of them, making sure they don’t squeak or get jammed.

Reduce clutter around the house

One of the main objectives of feng shui is to reduce clutter. Not only does it create underlying stress, but it’s also been proved to negatively impact mental health. Cut the mess by installing some storage solutions, like cupboards and wardrobes especially designed to fit in awkward spaces.

Add plants

Another way to increase productivity is the humble house plant. By placing a couple of these near your working station or desk, you are connecting with wood element which promotes expansion, growth and gives rise to new opportunities.
