Best Hospitals in Manchester 2023
Being among Britain’s major cities, Manchester is home to its share of large hospitals. Of these, a few stand out. Let’s take a look at a few of them, and assess their relative merits. If you’re in the area and considering medical care, then knowing what you’re choosing between might be invaluable.
The Christie Hospital
This facility holds the distinction of being the largest single-site cancer centre on the continent. It’s been rated ‘good’ by the Care Quality Commission, which is the independent regulator for England. In 2022, auditors found no significant weaknesses – which would tend to indicate a well-run facility.
Of course, with so many cancer patients coming and going, it’s an inevitability that a few of them might suffer worse outcomes than others. This danger might be exacerbated by strikes among junior doctors. In these cases, a medical negligence case might help to extract a legal remedy for the suffering patient.
Manchester Royal Infirmary
This enormous, grand-looking building in the city centre is the largest hospital in Manchester University’s NHS Foundation Trust. It’s actually on a site with several other hospitals, including the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, Saint Mary’s Hospital, and many more. Opened in the 18th century, it’s undergone regular modernisation over hundreds of years – but presently, according to the CQC, it ‘requires improvement’.
Spire Hospital
Spire is a private healthcare provider – meaning that, to be treated here, you’ll need to be able to pay for it, whether out of your own pocket, or through insurance. To get the best possible treatment, you may need a referral letter from your GP, who can recommend an appropriate specialist consultant. If you’re paying directly, you can phone them and make the appointment yourself; if you’re doing it through an insurer, you can entrust this task to them.
St. Mary’s Hospital
This is another specialised hospital, which offers services targeted at women and children. Since the late 18th century, it’s been helping to usher new babies into the world, and to provide care for the mothers at the same time.
North Manchester General Hospital
This facility, often abbreviated to just NMGH, is another to be run by the NHS Foundation Trust at Manchester University. The site originally hosted three separate hospitals. These were Crumpsall, which began as an infirmary for the Manchester Union Workhouse; Delaunays, which was intended as a hospital for the Prestwich Board of Guardians; and Springfield, which, among other things, served as a home for the mentally ill before becoming Springfield Hospital in 1948, when it joined the then-new National Health Service. These were collapsed into a single hospital in the 70s. This hospital has been promised a significant investment – which will roll out over the course of the next decade or so.
